Backing up Scion VP Jack Hollis with some visuals at the 2012 NAIAS press conference unveil.

The 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, MI played host to the public reveal of the GReddy/Scion drift racing FR-S. Built for the 2012 Formula Drift season, the racecar was conceived, assembled, and tested behind closed doors. Top secret stuff. Remember, the first rule of FR-S is "you don't talk about FR-S".

With the production Scion FR-S already causing a storm of e-thug discussion on the Interwebs, it was important that the racing version also enjoy its time in the spotlight. After two days at the track with the GReddy Scion FR-S and a production Scion FR-S, we came back with a load of action-packed footage. Cut together by the team at O2 Studios, our GReddy Scion FR-S cut made its debut during Jack Hollis' press presentation at the NAIAS. A separate, longer cut was put together by the team here at Clockwork Media to further showcase the GReddy Scion FR-S.

Our first season producing the Scion Racing: Driven To Drift series ended on a bittersweet note at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA.

Our first season producing the Scion Racing: Driven To Drift series ended on a bittersweet note at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA. Our "home" drifting racetrack, Toyota Speedway is a mere 30-minutes away from our offices and is close to Scion HQ and both drift teams. We had high hopes for a great finish and winning storyline but mechanical troubles fell on Team Need For Speed's Fredric Aasbo right in front of our cameras. RS*R's Ken Gushi gave one of his best drives all season but some times, that's racing.

We've learned a lot during the 2011 Formula Drift season about how the series works and how the teams mesh together. Both drivers will be returning with Scion Racing in 2012 and we look forward to the adventure of producing Season 4 of Driven To Drift.

Just getting visitors to your page isn't enough. A solid welcome page is the key to gathering and turning over the most number of "likes" on Facebook. More tips to maximize your web marketing.

The Internet is fast. Webpages, technology, and programming languages move at the speed of light (MySpace, who?). You only have a precious few seconds and 2-3 clicks to capture a visitors interest before they're lost again to the open seas of the Web. If you're on Facebook, it's even worse. The Internet within an Internet is a solid route for business to build their own followings and audiences but getting there is not an overnight process.

In order to have heavily commented updates about what you did over the weekend, you're going to need a lot of likes. If you deal with or sell to the public, gathering an audience shouldn't be a problem as long as you can capture their interest. Enter the Welcome Page.

By default the Welcome Page is a static FBML Facebook add-on app that allows you to show HTML, CSS and Java right off the bat and can determine if the visitor is already a fan or not. In English, this means you can show a different part of your Facebook page to visitors who haven't already "liked" you. Assuming you have a targeted marketing plan and focus in place, you can create a page that entices "likes" and can help you get fans right off the bat - without them having to look through your wall or info. This is a good thing as most web users will leave a site if they cannot find anything of interest in a max or 2-3 clicks.

Background plate (L) and final with embedded showreel video (R)

The purpose of a Facebook Welcome Page differs per company, of course, but the key is always the same - design. As the first thing that a user sees, the Welcome Page should be eye-catching and easy to understand. There is only one purpose here - to get people to click "Like". There's no need here for sign-ups, giveaways, menus, boxes, or anything that detracts from getting a "Like". That's what the Wall is for.

In our case, we are most often visited by people interested in our work, services, or who have heard of us by reputation. We wanted our Facebook Welcome Page to quickly get across our design and video capabilities and, most importantly, give a striking "Like Us" feel. We ended up with a modern, simply laid-out page that displays our current demo reel film and asks for a "like" at the top, near the Like button.

Moving animated words can make plain narration seem interesting? Welcome to the world of kinetic motion typography.

A short kinetic (motion) typgraphy animation piece completed as an addition to our 2012 Tri-Mountain promo. Used at trade shows, the typography piece is used in between loops of the 2012 catalog promo.

What is kinetic motion typography, you may ask? Kinetic typography is a form of digital animation that basically moves, rotates, skews, and animates text. Usually done to match narration or speech, it's a great method to dress up an otherwise boring-to-watch audio sample. Since the typography inherently has to match the words in the audio so closely, there's no automated way to do kinetic typography automatically. It all has to be done manually, with precise changes done to match inflection, pronunciation, speed of speech, as well as some attention paid to making sure it isn't boring.

The work is, needless to say, not terribly simple and does require some amount of time. Some common tools to accomplish kinetic typography are Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, although more complex 3D solutions can be used as well. For a great tutorial on how to accomplish simple motion typography, check out the Crooked Gremlins site HERE.

One of the largest manufacturers of blank and corporate apparel, Tri-Mountain wanted its 2012 catalog to feature 200 new styles and 5 distinct brand names. With a refreshed tagline of "We're What's New", Tri-Mountain entered the 2012 year with a renewed emphasis on branding, design, and marketability. Our (not so simple) job was to impart the notion that their catalog had nearly doubled in size and to fit 5 brand overviews into 2 short minutes.

The end result was a motion-lapse overlay of numerous Tri-Mountain outfits, blended together. Shot over 2 days with 2 very understanding models at 3 different locations, the finished product is a video catalog promo used for trade shows and helping out sales teams.

Driven To Drift, a web series produced for Scion Racing, goes behind-the-scenes and provides a glimpse into Scion's efforts in the sideways, smoky automotive racing sport known as drifting. Here, Season 3 heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. With temperatures hovering near 100-degrees at night, the event proved to be tough for both the racers and our shooting team alike. The two Scion tC drift teams headed out to Las Vegas with high hopes but drivers Fredric Aasbo and Ken Gushi were faced with engine troubles and tough competition. And with the races stretching out late into the night until 2AM, there would be little time for anybody to rest.

One of the leading aftermarket suspension manufacturers, TEIN turned to us for the international launch of the Street Basis line. Released simultaneously in the American (USA), Japanese, and Chinese markets, the TEIN Street Basis suspension is a global evolutionary redesign of their high-volume Basic unit.

By combining "made in Japan" quality with a very attractive price point, the new suspension was sure to be a hit. In order to convey that message, we put together two separate videos which would be used for Internet viral and Japanese broadcast use. The first is a photoshoot on wheels, combining beautiful driving footage with emotive narration copy and crisp backgrounds. Using popular street car platforms, the video takes tuning car enthusiasts from the urban cityscape to the curves of mountain roads.

Produced simultaneously in English, Japanese, and Chinese, the full length Street Basis video speaks to both potential buyer and educated dealer alike. The piece features detailed product shots and information on the Street Basis' construction, quality, design, and features. Using actual TEIN R&D staff and showcasing their in-house prototyping process, the video takes viewers through the Street Basis' design and testing.

All videos feature concept, storyboarding, narration copy, shot scripts, translation, voiceover production, filming, editing, post-production, and SEO optimization from Clockwork Media.
